As we have stated earlier, Oranjemund, is above all a beautiful and lush mining town that just happens to be situated in a unique position North of the mighty Orange river and a mere 10 minutes drive from unspoilt desert beaches .
Due to the recent global recession, the mine has been forced to dramatically reduce their workforce and in turn a number of these employees had to leave the town. This has left a number of vacant mining houses empty. These houses are mostly 3 bedrooms in size , with a kitchen laundry, bath, toilet, lounge and garage. All these homes have fenced in gardens.

ORANJEMUND - AN UNIQUE OASIS OF A TOWN
The local economy has taken a bit of a dip and due to the fact that all buildings are currently built on unproclaimed land, nobody wants to invest in the town. A few local businessmen came up with the idea of utilizing the empty houses, promote local establishments and to start a project to see if tourists would like to come and visit this part of the world, that until recently had some of the strictest access controls on the African continent
During the December holidays, the town gets even quieter when a number of the locals head back to their families in other parts of the country.
We believe that we have the resources to enable us to "market" our unique town as an alternative tourist destination and the Sperrgebiet Vacation Project was created to give tourism in Oranjemund a trial run.
Those three photographs that you see at the top of this page are the unspoilt beach, the local outdoor heated swimming pool and an early morning sunrise across the Orange river mouth. .

So in essence, we are a local project that wishes to establish our beautiful town as a holiday destination!
